Nyamongo residents devise new way to tackle stalemate

Mesothelioma Survival Rates About 40 percent of patients with mesothelioma survive the first year after diagnosis. That survival rate depends on many factors, including age, cancer stage, cancer type, race and gender. Long-term survivors attribute their success to treatment from a mesothelioma specialist, alternative medicine and nutritional changes. Average mesothelioma survival rates Mesothelioma claimed nearly 30,000 American lives between 1999 and 2010. About 40 percent of U.S. patients live to the one year mark. By the second year, about 20 percent of patients are still alive.
THE probe team formed by the government to look into wrangles between the North Mara gold mine and villagers has completed its task and has handed over their report to the Energy and Minerals Minister, Prof Sospeter Muhongo.
Speaking in the township in separate interviews with the ‘Sunday News’ over the weekend, some of the workers and villagers said they supported the recent initiatives by the government through Minister Muhongo to look into the conflict and proposed other additional solutions alongside the ministry's pending efforts.
They said that the efforts include conducting a modern town planning scheme at Nyamongo Township by the district council that will identify the legitimate ownership of land.
According to a local investor in small-scale mining and agriculture in the township, Josephat Mwita, once the whole town is measured and residents issued with title deeds, the issue of illegal compensation claims due to unwarranted construction commonly known as 'Tegesha' will end because all pieces of land will be marked to rightful owners and as a result getting rid of unscrupulous beneficiaries.
He said following the fact that the township was not properly identified to suit the criteria of a modern settlement area and measured according to relevant existing scheme and town planning laws, residents solely relied on traditional ownership of land without title deeds and as a result they have continued to construct more buildings without following the correct order.
Mr Mwita noted that because most people had no proper legal ownership documents including lacking title deeds and failure by local authorities to conduct relevant town planning exercise, they (locals) have been involved in unofficial exchange and sale of land to other interested parties.
“By putting in place proper initiatives to conduct marking in the township according to modern town planning scheme, everybody will be issued with legitimate ownership documents and avoid construction in earmarked areas for social services such as =open spaces, schools and health facilities, and this will also bring to an end unending compensation claims from fake beneficiaries,” he said.
Mwita who has also introduced a sunflower factory some five kilometres from the main North Mara mine at Murito farm has advised residents, mainly youths to embark on other income generating activities such as agriculture at their vicinity and avoid the tendency of being too dependent on mining only.
He said the society has a role to play to change the mindset of people living adjacent to the mining investment premises that the gold mine, just like any other property and business is owned legally by Acacia and should be respected and free from criminal activities such as trespass and stealing of gold sand by armed gangs.
“We urge the youth residing and operating here to embark on other income generating projects including using the fertile land and favourable climatic conditions to cultivate cash crops and avoid the old-age phenomenon that the gold belongs to them even when the investor has completed all relevant legal acquisition procedures to own the premise.”

'We are prepared to provide an alternative source of income to mining to around 400-500 residents, mainly youth when production starts next month here, which will ensure that they get employment as labourers,” said Mwita.
